Oasis Academy student wins award

AmyJay McCourt from Oasis Academy Lord’s Hill has been honoured with the Founder’s Award for the most inspirational individual entry at the inaugural Oasis Community Learning Annual Awards, held in Birmingham on the 11th May.

16 year old AmyJay McCourt used to regularly truant from school due to a difficult home life. Her attendance levels last year dropped to just under 30%, and consequently risked having a negative effect on her future.

However, in a remarkable turn-around following personal development support meetings, AmyJay has now taken on responsibility for her attendance and learning, and is now attending 86% of lessons. She now also supports and mentors others who are facing difficult circumstances.

Ian Golding, Principal of Oasis Academy Lord’s Hill, said, “The turn-around in AmyJay’s life is quite staggering. With the support of staff and the SAST AmyJay is now on course to achieve some good GCSE results. In addition, AmyJay is acting as a mentor for other students who are facing challenging situations. She is a lovely, kind person who will help anyone and never mentions her own circumstances. She fully deserves this award.”

Steve Chalke, Founder and CEO of Oasis Community Learning, said, “AmyJay encapsulates the newly launched Oasis Community Learning Charter. Amongst other things, it says we are inclusive, we are unique, we are perseverance, we are hope, we are future. AmyJay has qualities which will undoubtedly hold her in good stead, and will also be used as she mentors others. Well done AmyJay!”

AmyJay said, “I can’t quite believe I have won this award! Now that I’m attending the Academy more, and have sought help from my teachers, I’m hopeful for a positive future for myself.”

Our Education Charter statements encapsulate the core essence of what Oasis Community Learning is striving to achieve; the values in the statements express what motivates our educational emphasis and focus, while also describing the attitudes and attributes shared across our organisational family. These statements are our identity and DNA – they inform the reader or listener who we are, and what we want to achieve, both in an educational setting, but also in our holistic approach to each and every person we encounter.

The Oasis Charter , which spells out the things that motivate our educational focus and emphasis, can be found here, and is captured in the format, ‘We Are...’:

We are community – we are relationships
We are learning – we are achievement
We are unique – we are inclusive
We are enjoyment – we are perseverance
We are hope – we are future
We are Oasis...
