Oasis Youth Theatre

Oasis Youth Theatre, formerly known as Oaklands Youth Theatre has been a part of this community for many years. The multi-award winning OYT has attracted worldwide attention over the year’s performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the IDEA World Congress in Paris and the Victoria Shanghai Academy in Hong Kong, amongst others.

In 2010, OYT won the All England Theatre Festival and went on to represent England at the British One Act Play Festival Final with ‘One Million to STOP THE TRAFFIK’.

STOP THE TRAFFIK was founded in 2006 by Oasis Founder, Steve Chalke MBE as a campaign coalition which aims to bring an end to human trafficking worldwide.

More recently, OYT presented ‘I Love you – I Promise I Won’t Die’ at the prestigious Brits School in Croydon.  Telling the tragic true story of teenager Daniel Spargo Mabbs who died after taking ecstasy at an illegal rave in January 2014, the play was commissioned by the Daniel Spargo Mabbs Foundation, set up by Daniel’s parents. The play, written by Mark Wheeller, uses the words of Dan’s family and friends to tell this tragic story, and is currently on tour with the amazing StopWatch Theatre Company.

Mark Wheeller

The extraordinary success of OYT, is largely down to the hard work and talents of former Oasis Academy Lord's Hill Drama teacher and published playwright, Mark Wheeller. Mark retired from teaching in August 2015 leaving a fantastic legacy and through his plays he continues to impact lives in this community and beyond. His plays are current set texts for GCSE Drama students across the country, alongside William Shakespeare and other well reputed playwrights. Mark is also extremely good at recognising young talent, and has had many of his students go on to create their own success in TV, film, theatre, and the arts as successful performers, directors, producers and writers. You can find out more about Mark and his plays here.
