This term, we expanded our Book Buddies programme to include pupils from Fairisle Junior School.
For many years, the initiative has thrived within Oasis Lord’s Hill, pairing some of our most confident Year 9 and Year 10 readers with younger students. These sessions give students the chance to share stories, read aloud, and build both fluency and comprehension in a supportive environment.
The latest development sees the programme extend to Fairisle, where our older students have been working closely with Year 5 pupils. Each week, they have visited the Junior school library to get to know the children, listen to them read, and chat about the books they enjoy most.
The atmosphere has been really encouraging. The library setting has helped genuine connections form, with students from both schools showing lots of enthusiasm and kindness. It’s been inspiring to see early mentoring relationships develop and potentially grow even more as they move through their school years.
We are thrilled with the success of this new partnership and look forward to building on it further in the months ahead.
